If you can read this, you are seeing the site on the new host!!! Yay
WOW! What an exciting month for children, teachers, parents, guardians and “Family Literacy.”
Through a fantastic collaboration between Literacy for Adults in Brevard (LAB), the Brevard County Manatees and Rolling Readers Space Coast, children and families from three Brevard county (Florida) elementary schools (Endeavour & Cambridge-Cocoa and Oak Park-Titusville) along with three public libraries (Satellite Beach / Suntree / West Melbourne) have been treated to a special book called-
HOME RUN PRIDE: READING WITH THE TRIBE.
While this event may seem “small” in the world of SUPER HEROES and in the world of EDUCATION, it truly is much bigger in reality. Quite possibly for the first time in history, fictional Super Heroes have been combined with “real life” lessons as an “educational book series” that qualifies to be in schools.
Also for the first time in history, a Super Heroes book series has been written with a dyslexia friendly font called DYSLEXIE.
Just imagine, not only will the 8 out of 10 children who are considered “average or normal readers” have an opportunity to read this book series but also the 1 out of every 5 children who struggle to read due to dyslexia, may be able to read this series too! (DYSLEXIE does NOT help everyone who is dyslexic)
HOME RUN PRIDE: READING WITH THE TRIBE, is the 12th book in the Neon Tiki Tribe series and the first “Hardcover” book we’ve ever released. The story centers around Zeke, the leader of the Neon Tiki Tribe, who has been “zapped” by the evil Ku Tiki Tribe’s flying contraption called HUMBUG, and has lost his ability to read.
As you can imagine, the “excitement” levels at the schools listed above continued to rise as the Brevard County Manatee Players (Victor Roache / Chris McFarland shown above, along with others not pictured) and the real “Star” of the show, “MANNY the Manatee” arrived.
“Manny” and the players interacted with the children, teachers and volunteer readers as they discussed the importance of reading and told the kids how reading has helped them achieve their success and goals in life.
While we don’t want to give away ALL the details, The message is: that even if you’re an adult who struggles to read, if you’ll go to your local library and “ask for help,” their staff members will lead you to a local adult literacy agency in your community.
With illiteracy rates at approximately 45,000 Brevard County adults, along with “millions” of adult Americans, this book along with the unique dyslexia friendly font, called DYSLEXIE, truly has the potential to help so many people learn to read.
So, to end this blog we want to say “THANK YOU!” Thank You! Kristen Tinker and Literacy for Adults in Brevard. Thank you! to Kyle Smith (and Jennifer Garcia), the Brevard County Manatees players and “Manny the Manatee.” Thank You! Susan Thomas and the Rolling Readers Space Coast. Thank You! Endeavor Elementary School, Oak Park Elementary School, Cambridge Elementary School and coming next week Riviera Elementary School and last but not least, Thank You! Marlena Harold and all of the staff at the Brevard County Public Libraries- West Melbourne, Suntree, Satellite Beach and Eau Gallie.
NOTE- HOME RUN PRIDE: READING WITH THE TRIBE (along with 11 other exciting books in the series) are available as a fully narrated APP (Ipad/Iphone) and also as an EBOOK (Kindle) formats now and within a few weeks will also be available for the Android tablets and phones.
